| From the Real Beer Page Mail 5.1,
January 1999: AND THE DARKER THE BETTER Tests by Japanese researchers show that beer may inhibit the action of mutagens caused by some suspected cancer-causing compounds. Scientists at Okayama University near Hiroshima did the research, which appears in the January print issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The peer-reviewed journal is a publication of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. Twenty-four different beers, including 17 lagers, four stouts, two ales and one nonalcoholic, from 11 countries were examined. Nearly all of the beers showed "potent inhibitory effect" against mutagens found in several types of heterocyclic amines, according to Sakae Arimoto-Kobayashi, Ph.D., lead author of the report. The stout beers were the most potent, claims Arimoto. The nonalcoholic beer and one of the lagers had no effect. The beers tested were from England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Russia, Scotland, South Africa and the United States. Produced during the cooking of food, HAs are known carcinogens in animals and are believed to contribute to cancer in people. (1/10/99) |

NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE Newcastle Brown ale is looking for a few good alibis, and in return offering some nifty prizes and a bit of fun. If you've got a good alibi for showing up late, then enter the Little Brown Lie Sweepstakes. If you find yourself in need of such an alibi, say because you've lingered too long savoring the flavor of a Newcastle Brown Ale, you'll find some ready-made alibis there. You can also hang out with "those lads" from Newcastle, take their trivia quiz and sign up to receive their activity book. Here's a free alibi to get you started: "I'm allowing it to achieve the proper 'room' temperature." http://www.newcastlebrown.com From RBPMail 4.12, December 1998. (12/14/98) |

These people have way too much time on their hands... Check out: This web site from Florida State University offers photographs of famous beers taken through an optical microscope. They also offer a screensaver and, if you're not too interested in the beer photos, there is a cocktail site as well. Too bizarre... |

New Arrivals The Owl is pleased to announce the new beer arrivals - La Fin du Monde (bottle) - This beer is something you would definitely want to try even if you had to go to "The End of the World" to get it!. Brewed by Unibroue Inc. in Quebec, this Belgian style ale uses only the finest of ingredients and a triple fermentation process to produce a wonderfully smooth ale. Maudite (bottle) - Don't let this beer's name fool you! "Cursed" it is not! Maudite is another Belgian style ale brewed by Unibroue Inc. in Quebec. Darker in colour and more robust in taste than La Fin du Monde, this ale is a treat for any occasion! Red Seal (bottle) - Red Seal from North Coast Brewing Co. contains malt and hops beautifully married in a full-bodied, copper-red Pale Ale. It is generously hopped in the traditional manner for a long, spicy finish. Alaskan Amber (bottle) - Richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to make this beautiful amber colored "alt" style beer notably well-balanced. Alt fermentation by Alaskan Brewing Co. yields a remarkably smooth and well blended beer. (6/8/98) |

Changes to the Web Page Notice anything different about the web page? There's been a couple changes here and there! We added two new sections: Web Pages (provides links to your personal web pages) and Old Town (giving you information about what's happening around Old Town Roseville). There's also a few new email addresses floating around. The old email addresses still work, but these might be a bit easier to remember. (5/25/99)
